Building the Net-Centric Organization

Investigator(s): Vijay Gurbaxani and Robert Plice

Success is increasingly coming to companies that adopt a network-centric approach. Utilizing existing work addressing the impact of information systems on organizations and markets, this research provides a scientific description of network-centric concepts and principles. Deriving insights from the fundamental principles of competitive strategy and the economics of organization design, the project examines how these are being transformed by emerging network technologies and how companies can move toward their operationalization.

Achieving Value-Network Leadership in the 21st Century

Investigator(s): Vijay Gurbaxani, Gloria Mark and Robert Plice

In this follow-on project aimed at facilitating the transition to a networked organizational model, we recognize that the ability to continually evolve a company’s organization structure to reflect the new economics of organization is as vital to success as strategy. Indeed, as strategy becomes more imitable, it is an organization’s structure, processes and capabilities that afford the essential means to attain sustainable competitive advantage. This project seeks to answer 3 main questions:

  • What are the characteristics of these networked organizational forms?
  • What are the capabilities required to create, sustain and successfully leverage the net enabled organization?
  • What is the organizational model best suited to capturing value in global networked economy of the future?
