Vidyanand Choudhary was appointed to the Editorial Board of Information Systems Research as Associate Editor, effective January, 1, 2009.

Vidyanand Choudhary will serve as Track Chair for the Pacific Asia Conference on Information Systems (PACIS), Hyderabad, India, July 10-12, 2009.

Imran Currim was the recipient of the 2008 “Excellence in Teaching Award," from the Fully Employed MBA Program. He was appointed Associate Dean for the Masters Program at the Merage School of Business.

Jason Dedrick and Kenneth L. Kraemer were featured in BusinessWeek: “How Many U.S. Jobs Does the Apple iPod Create?” December 12, 2008.

There has been considerable media attention from the IM Study by James Danziger and Kelly Garrett. This included articles in The New York Times (June 2008), the Boston Globe (June 2008) and an interview on the Brian Lehrer Show (June 2008).

Sanjeev Dewan served as Track Chair at the International Conference on Information Systems held in Paris, France in December 2008. He will be a Program Chair for the Pacific Asia Conference on Information Systems, which will be held in Hyderabad, India, July 10-12, 2009.

Sanjeev Dewan received a service award from INFORMS (Institute for Operations Research and Management Sciences) for his five year service as senior editor at Information Systems Research. He also received a Certificate of Appreciation from Management Science for continuing service on its editorial board.

In April 2008, Paul Dourish was elected to the CHI Academy, a group of individuals honored by the ACM special interest group on computer-human interaction for their contributions to CHI research.

Paul Gray is on the Board of Advisors for AIS Transactions on Human-Computer Interactions (2009).

Vijay Gurbaxani was quoted in India Knowledge at Wharton on May 29, 2008: “Now That the MTN Merger Deal Has Collapsed, What's Next for Bharti Airtel?”

Vijay Gurbaxani is now serving as Editor of MIS Quarterly and continues to serve on the Blue Ribbon Task Force on Sustainable Digital Preservation.

Vijay Gurbaxani, Kiron Ravindran and Anjana Susarla received the 2008 Microsoft Paper Award for research on the social network structures of software development, based on their paper “Social Networks and Contract Enforcement in IT Outsourcing.”

Kenneth L. Kraemer and Paul Tallon received a Best Publication of the Year award from the senior IS scholars at the ICIS meeting in Paris in December '08. Their paper "Fact or Fiction? A Sensemaking Perspective on the Reality Behind Executives' Perceptions of IT Business Value" appeared in the Journal of MIS in 2007.

Gloria Mark’s two studies “No Task Left Behind? Examining the Nature of Fragmented Work” and “The Cost of Interrupted Work: More Speed and Stress” were cited in the New York Times article – “Shortcuts: Multitasking Can Make You Lose ... Um ... Focus,” October 25, 2008.

Don Patterson participated on a panel for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence Spring Symposium 2009: “Resources for Research on Large-Scale Human Behavior Modeling: Opportunities and Challenges.”

James Pick received the University Faculty Honors Award for Outstanding Research and Creative Activity from the University of Redlands, June, 2008.

Bill Tomlinson was awarded a 2008 Sloan Research Fellowship. He is among 118 scientists at 64 colleges and universities to receive the honor this year. The program supports the work of exceptional young researchers in a variety of fields, including physics, computer science, economics and mathematics.

Bill Tomlinson, Lindsey Richland and Eric Baumer won a two-year, $200,000 CreativeIT grant from the National Science Foundation to develop and test a text-mining tool that can automatically identify metaphors in manuscripts.

Bill Tomlinson presented his study “Exploring the Role of the Reader in the Activity of Blogging” at the ACM Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems (CHI 2008). Media attention included articles in the Washington Post (4/16/08), the Wall Street Journal (4/15/08), the Economic Times, India (4/10/08) and CBC News (4/9/08).

Alladi Venkatesh was one of thirty-five of the world's leading academic experts in multichannel marketing that participated in the Thought Leadership Conference in January 2009 at the Center for Retailing Studies at Texas A & M. Teams identified solutions to several major problems faced by retailers today, and outcome papers from the conference will be published in a special edition of the Journal of Interactive Marketing.

We are pleased to announce that Professor Shivendu Shivendu from The Paul Merage School of Business at UC Irvine has joined CRITO as a Faculty Associate. Professor Shivendu is an accomplished researcher in the areas of economics of information systems, digital goods supply chain, forecasting and analytical modeling. His research focuses on the confluence of technology, economics and public policy. He holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Southern California where he also earned his Master of Arts in Economics. Please join us in welcoming Professor Shivendu.

Lauren Louie has joined CRITO as a staff research associate. She is working with Alladi Venkatesh on his research on computers in the home. In the Fall she will start the PhD program at the Paul Merage School of Business. Please join us in welcoming and congratulating her!

Jennifer Yu has joined the CRITO team as an undergraduate research assistant. She is working with Kenneth Kraemer and Jason Dedrick on their research on offshoring.


On the Move

Paul Tallon has joined the Sellinger School of Business and Management at Loyola College, Maryland, as an Associate Professor of Information Systems.

Steven Chen will be an assistant professor of Marketing at California State University Fullerton beginning in August. His advisor is Alladi Venkatesh, and his dissertation is titled Worlds of Design: Design Values, Design Orientation, and Problem Solving. Congratulations Steven!

Jui Ramaprasad will be joining the faculty at McGill University this summer. Her advisor is Sanjeev Dewan, and her dissertation is titled Online Social Influence and Consumer Choice: Evidence from the Music Industry. Congratulations Jui!

We were fortunate to have Heli Paavola as a Visiting Researcher from the University of Tampere earlier this year. She collaborated with Alladi Venkatesh and recently returned to Finland.

Stella Ly, CRITO’s financial analyst, completed her MBA from Cal State University Fullerton. Congratulations Stella!
