Sara Kiesler is Hillman Professor of Computer Science
and Human-Computer Interaction at Carnegie Mellon University. She applies
behavioral and social science to technology design and tries to understand
how technology changes individuals, groups, and organizations. She was
among the first to conduct scientific studies of computer-mediated communication.
With Lee Sproull, Pamela Hinds, Robert Kraut, and other colleagues,
she authored and edited books and articles on social aspects of the
Internet and the use of technology in organizations. Dr. Kiesler continues
to study the social impact of the Internet on families, problems associated
with multidisciplinary and complex forms of collaboration, geographically
dispersed science and project work, information sharing, and the design
of human-robot interaction. Dr. Kiesler holds a Ph.D. in Psychology
from The Ohio State University.
